My suggestion is using VLC ( greatest multimedia application Ive ever seen for ubuntu)..... System ( on top of the screen ) Administration Synaptic Package Manager In Quick Search free input text field type VLC nd after getting the search result you need to mark the vlc option and apply it ( including all sub-packages ) ...... after finishing installation you have vlc in Application * +

ubuntu comes with built in players but u need codecs to play non-open source formats.mplayer has all the codecs you need but it is a command line player,however,there is gmplayer which has the usual graphical interface and-smplayer,an application using mplayer as a slave and simplifying it s usage,but mplayer is experimental so you could try vlc as well,if vlc stands for video lan,than it also has all codecs built in. * +

To play mp3 u need to double click on the mp3 and let ubuntu search for the codecs or install all the restricted codecs * +
