ok, according to the nokia site, the c3 and other s40 phones can't multitask... Why then has my phone more than once popped up a screen saying too many applications running, please choose one to close showing around 6 applications currently running *

Yep.. There's multitasking but not true multitasking. It's available for web based applications such as e-mail, facebook etc. The phone runs the apps in background and when there's new e-mail or whatsoever the app pops up.
