No,wen u upgrade frm 2000 or 98 etc, u need2 activ8 it.Its so u cnt copy ur disk 4 udas 2 use.If u bort ur pc nw wit xp on,u wnt need 2 do it * +

Ussually if u upgrade ur windows 98 to xp or install new one u just need cd key but if u want to update ur windows xp online from micrsoft.Com u will need key activation for verify ur legal copy windows xp *
