The men were terrorists, murderers or guilty of heinous crimes, an interior ministry spokesman said.

At least 27 convicts have been executed since the moratorium was lifted, most of them militants, Reuters reported.

It is estimated there are more than 8,000 Pakistanis on death row. Rights groups say many convictions are unsafe.

A moratorium on hangings was lifted for terror-related crimes after a Taliban attack in December killed more than 150 people, mostly children, at a school in Peshawar.

But last week it became clear that officials had widened the capital punishment policy to include all prisoners on death row whose appeals had been rejected.

So far, 39 people have been hanged since December. More than 40 are scheduled to hang in the next week, an Interior Ministry spokesman said.

The ministry is reviewing the cases of hundreds more whose appeals have been exhausted. There are more than 8,000 Pakistanis on death row.

The moratorium on executions had been in place since a democratic government took power from a military ruler in 2008.

Human rights groups say convictions in Pakistan are highly unreliable because its antiquated criminal justice system barely functions, torture is common and police are mostly untrained.

Some of Pakistan's allies have criticised the executions.

'Executing a person who committed a crime when he was underage is in violation of international law,' said European Union Ambassador Lars-Gunnar Wigemark.

'We do not believe that the death penalty is a deterrent. We are furthermore concerned with possible miscarriages of justice.'

The ministry spokesman said of the 12 executed on Tuesday: 'They were not only terrorists, they included the other crimes, some of them were murderers and some did other heinous crimes.'

Despite being against the death penalty and agreeing with the human rights groups, at the same time, there ARE plenty of convicted terrorists in prisoners who have had their appeals rejected, and are prominent members of various terror groups, the Peshawar incident at the same time fueled an anger in both the judiciary and the masses to take firm action against the terror groups operating in the country. * +

tragedies and unfairness treated with methods that make these events just as tragic and unfair, but coming from the authorities this time. At least that's what this is to me. * +

Who cares if the death penalty is a deterrent or not. It's called a penalty, as in if you do this, then this will happen to you. Whether or not it deters someone is irrelevant. * +

Of course it matters if the penalty is deterring people or not, if you impose a penalty, and society still keeps on repeating the same thing over and over again, and to a much larger extent, of course you would need to look for other methods as this one failed. * +
