So it clearly does conform to a religion. * +

Nothing should stand between you and God. No imams, priests, rabbis or any other custodians of moral or religious leadership. Not spiritual masters and not even your faith. Believe in your values and your rules, but never lord them over others...
A sufi seeks love :-) let's not judge. * +

Sufism is a problem I've never approached. How old is it? * +

Truth is always relative. Every person's journey is unique. We all have our similarities and differences. Always respect others, my friend. That is the only way to live. We all have to learn from each other. God is in each and every one of us.
Sura Kaf - We created man: and we know what his soul whispereth to him, and we are closer to him than his neck-vein.

Mysticism/Sufism is religion.
Religion is not sufism. * +

Mysticism is as old as religion itself, I would say. Be it Christianity, Judaism, Islam or any other religion. It is the hidden dimension of religion.
Sufism began with Muhammad and later through Ali ibn abi Talib.
Sufi mystics say the secret of the Quran lies in the verse of Al-Fatiha,
And the secret of Al-Fatiha lies in Bismillahirrahmanirrahim (the opening words of Al-Fatiha),
And the quintessence of Bismillah is the letter Ba (Arabic),
And there is a dot below that letter. . .
That dot underneath the B embodies the entire Universe.
Rumi's Mathnawi starts with B. * +
