All things lack inherent existence, nothing exists in or by itself, the self we think of as 'I'..or me exists only in name, there is no self, no soul. This 'I' we think of and cherish constantly is a figment of imagination. All compound and uncompound phenomena exist only in this way. They rely upon their compononts and conditions to come into being..they even rely upon the mind that perceives them, all things are merely labelled by mind. * +

For example what we call a tree is a combination of leaves, trunk, bark, roots etc..there is no tree wothout these things..take away these things one by one until you have a pile of leaves, bark, roots etc and you have no tree..therefore the tree was only a name designated by mind. * +

Another angle of thinking about this with regard to yourself is to ask yourself this question then think deeply about your answer...Who has the thoughts in your head? Most folk reply 'I do, I have the thougts, I experience them' Now..if the thoughts ceased would there be a persona remaining? Or is the idea of a self just that?..an idea? * +

According to Buddhism the thoughts exist but no thinker does, the thinker..or idea of a thinker is just another thought..there is no 'I' experiencing the thoughts. Also according to these Sunyata teaching the realisation of this lack of self..the direct experience of this understanding as opposed to its intellectua understanding leads to the immediate end to suffering * +
