A horrible death is even more of a deterrent than a quick death. I will counter your point with regard to Nelson Mandela and peaceful protests. Who deserves more credit. A man who has no desire at all to commit adultry, or a man who has the potential and opportunity to perform adultry but chooses not to. A person who can fight the darker parts of his nature deserves an awful lot more credit than a person who is naturally inclined to a particular thing.

There are actually plenty of different sources for the Sharpeville massacre, many of these sources state that the proestors were actually hurling stones at the police, and one nervous police officer started firing without any given command, followed by the rest in the same moment of confusion and chaos. *
