The scientist who established the psychoanalysis, he focused mostly on the early development on children and believes they face various emotional conflicts and the adjustments of these conflicts shape our lives. He also focused on the unconscious mind and said there are various other highly disturbing conflicts going on in there that directly affect our behaviors and personalities. One of them is known an the Oedipus complex, which is a pretty bizarre theory. * +

Children, he believes technically go through 4 developmental stages known as 'The oral stage', 'Anal stage', 'Phallic stage'. 'Latency period' and finally 'The Genitals stage' It is during the Phallic stage he states that children develop their sexual identifications and develop the Oedipus complex which consists of disturbing conflicting thoughts that are only resolved by identifying with the same sex parent. The Phallic stage occurs when a child is around 3-5 years of age. * +

during the Oedipus complex, what happens is young boys develop sexual urges for their mother and in that situation view their fathers with hostility, but due to the fact that their fathers are more stronger and powerful than them, the children fear that the father in order to retaliate will castrate them. Being impossible to live under the constant anxiety of being castrated, the children start stressing their similarities with their fathers. * +

They basically act in the same manners as them and try to copy the same behaviours as their fathers in an attempt to not feel hostile towards him. * +

From the looks of it, the whole theory seems plain bulls**t, but the theory was supported when a case study was done on a child beginning from his childhood since 3 years of age until around 5 years of age. The aim of Freud was to report the findings of the treatment of t horses that the young boy had developed, who we later on find out may have been the displaced fear of his father in 'em, also the young boy had clearly shown sexual urges towards his mother. * +

This was interpreted from the child's fantasises and dreams and later on his anxiety and phobia grew much more worst, so much so that he couldn't leave his house 'cause of the fear of the horses, his father connected his fear of horses with his fear of large penises. The boy grew up to be a perfectly healthy man and had a normal teenage life, the boy does not rememebr the events occurred during his childhood. His anxiety and phobia was cured after two major fantasies reported. * +

Firstly he had a fantasy that he married his mother, had kids with her, and his father was the grandfather. And secondly he had a fantasy that a plumber replaced his bottom and genitals with much larger ones. * +

The study does pretty much prove Freud's theory, the horse perhaps was a symbol of his father, he even stated that he was particularly afraid of the ones with black spots which freud interpreted as them being his father's own mustache. Furthermore he had reported his dad of his growing jealous of a new-born sister, how he enjoyed going to the toilet with his maid and mother, how he fantasised about her underwear. He also developed interest in toilet functions and an interest in lumf * +
