Well a skeptic has the right to question the validity of the canonical gospels, but apocryphal writings are more easily discredited due to their age and often by the subject matter. I'll throw the Protoevangelium of James in here as well. How best to describe why they exist, 
think of it like a version of fan fiction that is copious today. The pseudepigraphy of such texts aids in immersion. * +
