I think it's because people have certain views that are personal to them, it isn't just a case of impartial debate. Everyone has sore points, but they usually remain confidential and aren't connected to shared beliefs such as a specific religion. Then you have conflicts of morality, patriotism (advocates of jingoism in some cases) and just the usual clash of cliques. The accruement of like-minded people to group together is a natural thing. * +
