How is the bible to be taken? How do you take it? * +

Me? Personally I take it literal. If it goes against tradition then traditions are wrong. * +

Some see it as a collection of religious myths. 'religious myths' not in the sense of 'lies' but parable or fable set in historicity but without a literal surface meaning, stories told to teach a higher meaning, lessons in allegory. While many also, stress strict literalism. * +

I think that's where mainstream christian theology and mainstream Jewish theology part company also. The latter, while accepting the literality of many things in their bible dwell largely on believed 'hidden' true meanings beneath the surface of the text... Kabbala and Talmud 'illuminating' these intended allegorical meanings. * +

i dont think its a good idea to take it literal simply due to its age . put it this way as good as a piece of cheese mite be it still has a use by date .... and as good as the bible is , its very very old * +

Either take I believe its undeniable that allegory and metaphor exists in the bible. The extent and importance of allegorical meaning may be debated. * +

The twist is that for bible faiths, the 'use by date' extends to 'until the end of time'. But yeah, we can't apply some things there in very literal ways. We may even end up running against current laws and values. Some once 'literal' meanings assume non-literal meaning for the contemporary bible reader as society evolves. * +
