Although I disagree with the dogma of papal infallibility which was there some time back I do sympathise with the rationale behind it... There should be some infallible authority if everything is to make sense. Jesus promised 'on this rock I will build my church'. Did he mean build a fallible church? * +

One of his farewell statements was 'Lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.' he promised elsewhere to send the spirit to 'teach you ALL things'. The problem with a fallible church is that its every decision must be taken with a pinch of salt. And there are a lot of landmark decisions on which we base our faith.... Beginning with canonisation itself. * +
