Idk which era you're referring to, but back in the day, when the church held sway over Christendom, the bible could only be owned and read by priests. To keep its contents from the laity and teach them only the official dogmas, to reduce heresy and to avoid members raising questions on church doctrines. It was a capital offence and many a layman possessing a bible was burned at the stake. * +
