when Jephthah returned home victorious he was met by his only child as she danced and played the timbrel... He bewailed his fate but his daughter told him its ok to do as he had promised since God had kept his part of the bargain by giving him victory... * +

This vow to offer up his daughter to the Lord appears to have been based on the regulations of Leviticus 27. There, Israelites could devote a field, animal or human being (in their custody) to God and verse 29 regulates that such a devoted could not be bought back or redeemed but was to be destroyed completely because they were now the Lord's. These are very difficult passages and I'll appreciate all inputs to try and reconcile these phenomena. Thanks. * +
