John speaks of a division,a gathering of the wheat after which the chaff would be burned up with fire that couldn't be put out.- Matthew 3:12. The baptism with fire then,is not the same as with holy spirit, for the wicked don't receive it. It's the punishment for those who are like a tree,''that does not produce fine fruit'' in verse 10. The fire is a symbol of destruction as in Luke 17:29,30. Other instances of fire representing destruction are found at 2 Thessalonians 1:8, Jude 7,2 Peter * +

I think the baptism of fire is when the Holy Spirit comes and burn everything that is unclean in u. * +

How can that be when John distinguishes the holy spirit baptism and the fire baptism? ''He will baptise you with the Holy Spirit AND with fire...''. The fire has nothing to do with the Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit has nothing to do with the fire. Hence the distinction ''AND''. * +

I agree with way2go as far as fire baptism referencing destruction of the wicked but I believe the fire is the AGENT of this destruction, not just a symbol of it. Sodom and Gomorrha was an example of what will happen to the wicked Jude 7. Except that this time its on a global scale... the entire planet and its atmosphere will be set ablaze and cleansed 2 Peter 3:7. Fire will rain down from heaven Revelation 20:9 until the wicked cease totally and are nothing but ashes Malachi 4:3. Baptism is fro * +

from the greek baptizo which means a total engulfing, immersion, overlwhelming of one's being. This fiery overwhelming and total engulfing described in those verses is aptly captured by the phrase 'baptism with fire.' * +

Agree on the meaning of baptism ie. immersion,by purest, but not on the burning of the earth and atmosphere literally. It's symbolic language. Yes,God will use supernatural means via Jesus and his angels (2 Thessalonians 1: 7,8. If God burned the atmosphere and earth, then he would be going back on what is said in Genesis 8:21,''I will not again curse the ground any more...neither will I again smite any more every thing living,as I have done.'' If the earth burned then all life would end. * +
