It dates to ancient Babylonian mystery religion. They feared their gods, they wanted to exert control over them and they had a superstition that numbers give you control over things. So in their pantheon of 36, they assigned numbers to their gods in rank c*mulatively, that is 1,2,3,5,8,13..... hence their supreme god, god number 36 got a number of 666. It represents a god with the supreme power. * +
