Salaam is the first definition for Islam. The literal meaning of Islam and its definitions imply that Islam must mean peace, security, safety and safeguard. It must be a safety from violence and killing and a means of protection. * +

The Prophet (PBUH) is reported to have said, the Muslim is he from whose tongue and hand All people are safe. (Im sure that there a very few definitions of love that are better than Salaam) * +

My understanding, and as we are taught from a young age, Islam is meant to be a covenant of Salaam 
, and Muslms are meant to convey this salaam, even to those who attack us. The Prophet PBUH conveyed so beautifully, that our actions and our speech are meant to convey peace to ALL people. * +
