Not actually the major religion of the modern era? It has the not far reaching consequences of all social institutions of past and present. Even our modern day wars, like the Libyan intervention are run on a profit basis. * +

Thats what we'd all like to think nomnom .. But its the primary driver of meaning for the lives of modern people. And its often been blamed for the sense of hopelessness, cynicism and apathy that marks post modern life. * +

Consumerism is not super natural, so by definition, no, it's impossible to be a religion. You need to get out more, there's a while world out there, why limit yourself to one tiny part of it? * +

Simply put, religion is not about the super natural. Its the practical and real way we put our most deeply held belief at the center of our lives. To many, the respect for Steve Jobs exceeds admiration for his God given talents. The Beatles themselves were attacked by fundamentalists when the famously made similar commentary about their place in pop culture. * +
