Some parts of London were simply unfit for human living by the '60s - no proper doors or windows, mud for carpet, just horrendous. Such was the issue that they built Milton Keynes fifty miles away, to relieve these areas, and allow for the post-war regeneration effort to catch up with the poorer parts of London.
The fact that people adored their new home and life in a clean and spacious Milton Keynes, despite the first estates being building sites of housing built with nothing more than breeze blocks and corrugated iron sheets, and the spartan 'new town' having few amenities (no hospital etc), shows just how bad London was by 1970.
London wasn't called 'The big smoke' for nothing - half-burnt leaded-fuel exhaust fumes filled the narrow streets, coal fired chimneys filled the air, and the buses literally painted the pavements black.
If you wanna smell London, you still can today - the underground still has it's famously unmistakable aroma. But otherwise, i can't see anyone being interested in a reminder of what life was like there back then. Apart from idealistic, positively nostalgic illusions, best found on YouTube from the comfort - and smell - of your own home. * +
