Cartegnan looked down his rifle scope at his target, being escorted by two agents in the dense tropical rainforest.. One last mission, they'd told him. He knew what that meant and had planned accordingly.

His target was nothing more than an insignificant pawn in a much larger game. The target thought he'd been safely hidden in exile, but he'd been right where the authorities had wanted him all along. Now, in the process of being captured, Cartegnan's masters had thought it an appropriate time to rid themselves of two burdens in one fell swoop.

Next to Cartegnan's beating heart was embedded a tiny incendiary pellet, no bigger than the head of a pin. Surgeons had placed it there decades ago and it had been there.. Lurking within him. Waiting for this final trigger.

But next to it lay a much newer addition, something Cartegnan had put there himself. His final insurance policy, placed there during his stay in a Bolivian chopshop (ostensibly as one of his many cybernetic augmentations).

He took the shot..

As the bullet pierced the heart of his target, his own chest erupted outward from the force of the pellet embedded inside him. Cartegnan's corpse fell from the sniper's nest, down a ramp and toward the waiting contragravity sled he had placed there hours before. The sled had a set destination and flew off there within an instant.. * +

But it was already too late. The miniaturized thermonuclear device within his body had already reached the destination it had, inexorably, been heading toward all this time.
