Do you think that penal labour is a good thing or not? Should we allow such a practice in today's age?

Robots take jobs from civilians.
Yeah, make them graft. All the jobs we don't wanna do. The worse the crime, the worse the grime - minor offences? Pack chickens in a fridge, do hot cast iron moulding, etc. Major offences? Sewage works, sewer cleaning, etc.
If prisons were hell labour, we'd have three clear benefits:
1) These jobs would get done, and the money saved goes to good causes.
2) Prisons would actually work, and deter people from risking going back there.
3) We could give shorter sentences where applicable, as the time would be more effective, saving prison space/cost. * +
