I agree, the problem with these kinda laws is that theyre not enforced adequately though.
Its kinda nuts that the cyclist has to pay compo in a case like this. What if hed veered into traffic to avoid the woman and got hit by a car? Would that be the car drivers fault? * +

A green light doesn't mean it's clear to proceed. It only means you're not forbidden to attempt the junction. In our town's development we had no traffic lights until our stupid transport councillor decided to start installing them. People started getting hurt, because the cars colliding both had green lights.
Nope, i don't see the point in green lights either, where you still have to give way to other traffic... * +

This mirrors the case where a pedestrian stepped out into the road, and was killed by the cyclist. The media ripped into the cyclist, talking about how he was on an 'olympic bike' without adequate brakes, and blah.

But from what i could see, most people agreed with his frustration with the pedestrian - if not his yobbish attitude.

The courts punished him. And parliament punished cyclists, by introducing a law against 'furious cycling'.

Pedestrians now have the green light to just step straight out in front of cyclists. In fact, i can see it becoming a nice little money-spinner. Because our courts are that toxic. * +
