I'm
surprised finding out that there are very few lions in this country and are mostly confined to the border regions near Zimbabwe, Swaziland and Botswana.
Thought there were tons in the Free State, NW province and KwaZulu Natal but this is not the case.
We had the Cape Lion that went extinct in the 19th Century which led almost the entire South African lion population going to extinction.
The Cape Lion had a black mane and ears. They were very large compared to other populations. Only recently this extinct population was connected to the wider east and southern African lion populations. They all came from Southern Africa and migrated to East Africa. The West, Central and Northern (extinct Barbary lion) are more distinct. * +

There is a white lion breed that arose out of the Kruger National Park area. This is the result of two alleles and are not albinos (the eye colour is normal as well as the paw pads).
They are a great spectacle and do well in zoos around the world. * +
