Its difficult, the mortgage i pay is a lot less than what someone would pay who wanted to rent the same home as me and the deposit now needed to get a mortgage is ridiculous. Its a very difficult situation for someone wanting to buy now especially if they are already renting. * +

Depends, the housing market comparative to wages is dead sh*tty, there's a disconnect. We bought our flat outright, something i absolutely did not think was possible for me only a year ago. Now that I know better I could never go back to renting but I know it is pretty much the only option for almost all of our friends.
We've got a viewing on Thursday for a house and I'm feeling so exceptionally grateful * +

Theoretically no, the government shouldn't help. Thing is though, it's the government's fault that housing here is so expensive.
They let 5,000,000 immigrants in - which would be fine, if they'd built more than 500,000 houses for them... * +

The government already help with the help to buy scheme. They lend you upto 20 percent of the mortgage value for a deposit but then they own 20 pecent of your house, including profit made from the increase in value when you sell.
I had government help in that i had a help to buy ISA, the government paid me just over 1000 quid as a tax free bonus which basically covered my solicitor fees. They also dropped stamp duty for 1st time buyers so i didnt have to pay that either * +
