It was said that it started with a single woman, then others joined in until there were hundreds of people doing it. If someone refused to join in, the reaction of the dancers was often violent. It was also said that they reacted violently to seeing the colour red. * +

Some historians have suggested that their diet was contaminated with certain hallucinogenic substances. But this could not explain everything.. It was a case of a highly transmissable concept, much like the witch burning hysteria. In fact, some thought that the devil could inflict you with a dancing 'curse'. * +

I've read about this. Yeah,there are a few potential causes from hallucinogens to people just simply joining in so as to not seem different.
It kind of makes me think of religious cults in a way.
Like the cult who were expecting to go to heaven when a comet flew past. They killed themselves. Or the Jonestown suicides. Why would you top yourself on some nutcases say so? * +

It's also kind of like the current Brexit situation. Some leave voters would rather starve or go without medicines. Well at least it's MY government that's causing me hunger or to have to go without medication than the EU providing me with sustenance and the medicine I need. That will teach them! * +

There certainly seems to be a link with the more modern Depression era 'dance marathons', similarly a craze that started with a woman who danced non stop for 27 hours.. Hmm. * +
