I don't know why I'm calling it that, just thought I'd make a topic. I was reading my Spanish Flu book again and came across these factoids:

Alexander Fleming did discover penicillin, but he didn't use it as an antibiotic.. He used it so he could grow influenza bacilli and not have it contaminated by other bacteria. It was only developed into a so called wonder drug a decade later. * +

Watson and Crick are often lauded as the discoverers of the DNA helix etc, this is true.. They discovered the structure itself. But the groundwork that led to this discover was by a man called Oswald T. Avery. He was obsessed with his work on influenza and pneumonia.. Almost to the exclusion of all else. A brilliant and dedicated scientist, he tried to find out what was causing pneu.mo.coccus to mutate.. He experimented tirelessly and finally narrowed it down to deoxyribonucleic acid * +

This was important because previously everybody thought genes were passed down via a process involving proteins.. Although Avery never received a Nobel for his work, the scientists who mattered did notice the paper he published and the implications of his work.

He once said there were two types of investigators: most ''go around picking up surface nuggets, and whenever they spot a surface nugget they pick it up and add it their collection.. The other type is not really interested in the surface nugget. He is much more interested in digging a deep hole in one place, hoping to hit a vein. Saw a documentary about her some years back, I find it fascinating that her cells are spread all over the world now. 'HeLa' cells.. * +
