As we approach the centenary of the end of WW1, I remember with pride the sacrifices of those in both wars who fought and died so that I may have the freedom what I have today.To those who gave their lives my thanks are completely inadequate. When you see a veteran. Don't think of the old person you see, think of the young person who gave up years of their life to help us. * +

I agree with these sentiments 100'/.. Sadly, we can no longer thank the veterans who served in WW1 personally, as they have all now passed away. So it's even more important now that we remember them and never forget the sacrifices they made.

The last fighting 'Tommy' who saw action in the trenches of the western front was Harry Patch, who died in 2009 aged 111. After that, the last surviving WW1 combat veteran was Claude Choules, who served in The Royal Navy from 1915-1926 and died in 2011 aged 110. The very last veteran of any sort who saw active service during WW1 was Florence Green, who joined the Women's Royal Air Force from 1918-1919 and served in the final year of the war, she died in 2012 just 15 days short of her 111th birthday. * +
