Could it originate from a point in time in the future? Alright, time makes as much sense going backwards as it does forwards. Maybe consciousness is just the manifestation of information spreading through space and time, like ripples.

If you wanted to be really technical, I guess you could go with the whole Carl Sagan 'star children' thing. Consciousness essentially comes from the waste products of stars. * +
