It's that time of year when millions of tiny spiders take to the skies, floating around in the wind on long strands of web. They're practically invisible and you never really notice them until you're walking along minding your own business, when you suddenly walk, usually face first, into one(or several) of the strands, which get wrapped around your head, or stuck in your hair(head and/or arms), or hooked around your ears. I hate it, they tickle and it makes me get all itchy.

They're probably not all that common in NY Peta. I'm way out in the middle of nowhere in the english countryside and it happens around this time every year. Not sure what species, or if it's just one species of spider that does it, or how widespread they are.

got loads in our garden atm makes me go all panicky in case one hides on me

Some people call them 'money spiders', due to an old wives' tale about it being an omen of good luck if one lands on you. According to the old wives, the spider has come to weave you new clothes, which in ye olde days was seen as a sign of good fortune. * +

got loads in our garden atm makes me go all panicky in case one hides on me It's not the spiders that bother me, it's just the infuriating itchiness the tickly strands induce. The strands can be several feet in length, so when you go to brush them off with your hand you just end up getting more of the bloomin stuff stuck to you.
