Found a stash of stuff I wrote in the late 90's early 2000, this one story I wrote has this in it:

''In the early years of the decade, the public had realized that certain online companies were collecting information about millions of individuals. They were collecting this personal information from people without paying them for it, and then selling it on for a very high price. When the public found out that their personal information (what brands of detergent they bought etc) was actually worth something, they began selling this information to companies directly. It soon became illegal for companies to collect personal information about an individual with the intention of selling that information. If a company didn't pay the individual, this was seen as stealing the financial resources of that individual. It was akin to a confidence trick.''
