What is humanity's purpose? Is it perhaps something that hasn't been realized yet?

Maybe we are here for a specific reason, but not something that benefits us at all.. Something bigger than us. * +

Imagine that there is no actual intelligent life out there in our own galaxy. The odds for anything surviving long enough to become intelligent might be extremely low.
But we are here, we are intelligent. Maybe it's time we started improving the odds by trying to kickstart life elsewhere before we are gone? * +

Or what about the life that is already here? So for instance, some day soon we could augment our own intelligence, make ourselves smarter etc etc.. Should we give this gift to our animal companions whom we have brought along with us through the ages? Give them an evolutionary boost, so to speak? Or maybe we already are without realizing it.. * +

Humanity's purpose is to help sustain life on earth, that bit's quite simple, but beyond that it gets a little more questionable - what is the purpose of the universe?
What is the point in any of it? It all just exists for no apparent reason. * +
