The old philosophical question..If a tree falls over in the forest and there's nobody there to hear it does it make a sound? I don't think it does. What say ye? Explain your reasoning too please. * +

Sound waves, only become sound when there's an ear to hear them. * +

Yes it makes a sound even if there's no one to hear it. I once placed a surveillance camera in a forest for a 21 day period to observe some activities and during that time 2 trees fell and they made sounds...hope that answers your question * +

the tree falling only makes a sound when there are ears that can hear it... sound needs ears to exist * +

The tree falling makes compression waves in the air that could be interpreted as sound once there is the required apparatus to do so. E.g. an ear and a mind. * +

Of course they make a sound, the sound waves will always exist whether they reach a receptor or not. As with any other type of wave, if you fire a radio wave into space, the radio wave still exists whether it reaches a receptor or not, same as the sound wave.

As an aside it shows once again that nothing exists independently. All the ingredients must be there ..a million trees falling make no sound without an ear and a mind to interpret. * +

There are many ears and/or other sensory apparatus in a forest. Maybe even within the tree itself. * +
