They should have shown a bit of respect and also should have known what to expect if it ever got out after and shown some restraint being in the public eye.
Yes they were right to sack them, they have a reputation to uphold and didn't want them dragging them down and it might have been written in a contract somewhere about behavior like this otherwise they were unlawfully sacked and could just sue them. * +
