The first athlete to run a mile in under 4mins
the story of which was made into the film 'Chariots of Fire'. He was 88 and had been suffering from Parkinsons disease. * +

At the height of my fitness, bearing in mind i can run, it took me almost six minutes to run a mile. I'm probably not far behind now, but the point is, four minutes might not sound amazing but it's unthinkable. * +

The current world record for the mile is 3m43.13sec by Hicham El Guerrouj of Morroco, set in 1997. Svetlana Masterkova of Russia holds the women's record of 4m12.56sec, set in 1996. I reckon whatever drugs they were taking 20odd years ago must be easier to test for these days. * +
