Good question. It used to confuse me all the time because in my head 'off' means stopped or not in operation. But in this case 'off' isn't referring to on and off. It means 'go off' like it was silent and all of a sudden it goes off, like making a loud noise, like a bomb/firework going off. A more action type word. Goes off gives you the impression that the room was silent, and then the alarm goes off and wakes you up. Getting it?
