A friend of mine studying media is writing an essay on the role of controversies in film promotion, and he needs valuable input. I've already shared my views with him, but I still wanted to post it on here though to see what people think about it and know their opinions. So what do y'all think?

Let's say a film mocked a religion or something and there's a massive controversy about it, and a good chance that it may lead to violence to happen at the cinemas - will that make people go watch it or avoid it? Do controversies help or hurt the films? * +

Sometimes such controversies eventually attract more of an audience to go see that movie etc which in turn equals more revenue...it all depends how extreme the marketing hype is * +

what is this Bollywood film that has people getting angry just recently, I watched a news article about it but still couldn't figure out why people were upset ?

think the last temptation of Christ was pretty controversial when it came out. luckily Christians don't usually kill people over offences taken, unless it's abortion (super ironically). * +

Beats not speaking up about it. How many times have you seen ''Based on a true story'' ..?

That basically means the film is re-writing history how the people want it bent. It's well-known that Hollywood has done this on a huge scale to try and re-educate the world into thinking America has played a more positive role throughout history, but of course it happens the world over. * +

that's usually done to make a story more dramatic or audience appealing because it'll sell more tickets. * +

So does appeasing your audience with a little local pride. And naturally adding a little drama spices things up, people love that shit. * +

the international film market is more important to Hollywood these days than the domestic one. plus jingoistic films tend to be shiite anyway, buyer beware and all that. * +

The threats only intensify the interest and curiosity. It makes people curious enough to go watch a film they otherwise wouldn't have thought about watching. * +
