''Cool costume '' said Laura,opening her door to the umpteenth trick or treater of the evening ..''it's a little late tho hon,are you alone ?....she peered into the darkness ,only the light from her open door offered any illumination ...looking back down , with an involuntary shiver she saw the boy had gone ....what the hell ,she muttered ....she hadn't felt anything brush past her ,so assuming her late night visitor had bolted for home she closed her door..
Later ,recounting the story over the phone to her sister she described him as 'around 6 or 7 ,dressed really old fashioned like the child chimney sweeps depicted in old books 'He even had a pale sooted up face and big haunted eyes ' she recalled with a laugh ..fabulous effort !
How's your moving in going anyway asked her sister ...Laura had recently moved in to one half of an old London townhouse ..Oh,a few days should see it done replied Laura ,for now I'm turning in its been a long day ...
With a hot chocolate in hand she toured her flat before bedtime ,loving all the carefully preserved original features ..
Entering the living room she reached to turn off the light when her eyes were drawn to the fireplace...and the dark spots on the tiled fire hearth ,drawing closer she saw it was soot ..
Damn she thought,that's supposed to be bricked up ...as she rose to fetch a brush she thought she heard a faint cry ....and a little more soot appeared ....
