The Battle of Passchendaele(aka the 3rd battle of Ypres), one of the bloodiest battles of the first world war, began today 100yrs ago. Approximately 800,000 men(~400,000 on each side) died in the course of the battle, which raged until Nov 10th, 1917 and resulted in Allied forces capturing just 5km of territory from the Germans.

Approximately 1.5 billion tons of ordinance were fired, including both regular explosive and chemical(mustard gas) shells, an estimated 500million tons of which failed to go off. Even to this very day, 100yrs later, some 200tons of unexploded shells are still being found and recovered/made safe in the area, every single year. * +
