We all know trains are expensive, but when one Newcastle man saw just how much it would cost to get to London, he decided to find a far, far better way that saved him money too..

Britain's trains cost. A lot. In fact, they'refive times more expensive than ones in Europea recent study found.

That's especially true if you're travelling last minute but there might well be a better way.

I actually really wanted to go to London tomorrow, but I looked at the train and it was 78.50 - the absolute cheapest I could find anywhere on the internet, Joe Furnessexplained in a video he shot of his trip.

Refusing to pay that much, the 21-year-old from Newcastle started researching other options.

I once flew from Newcastle to Manchester via Switzerland because it was 20 cheaper, so I thought Id look at the flights from Newcastle to anywhere in the world then back to [London] Gatwick were, he said.

I found that Newcastle to Menorca - the Spanish island - and then to London Gatwick was only 26. * +

The savvy traveller managed to hire a car, see the island, take in a festival and camp out on the beach (with a c0cktail), get to London and STILL save 40 on the cost of a train ticket.

I finally arrived into London, it took a long time, but it was worth it. * +
