Like anxiety being rooted in our fight or flight response, it seems to be a wayward aspect of our nature that was once more beneficial to us. Some people have a genetic predisposition to depression, genes which are linked to our immune response. When cytokines are released in said response, the symptoms mirror that of depression. The psychomotor issues you mentioned earlier, lethargy, anhedonia. In order words, being as inert as possible in order for the immune system to better do its work. It was more beneficial to our ancestors when people were dying all over the shop due to disease, it also suggests when stress leads to a bout of depression, it's the immune system upping the ante to deal with what must be plaguing the body. It's also been shown that those suffering from autoimmune disorders, hampering the function of cytokines, show an improvement in mood.
It's just a theory, don't go getting AIDS now Heppy.
