A PAKISTANI court has sentenced a man to death for comments he made about the prophet Mohammed on Facebook
The verdict is the latest step in nationwide crackdown on internet dissent in Pakistan, where unproven allegations of blasphemy have previously sparked violent mob lynchings. Mr Raza was arrested last year after engaging in an online debate about Islam on Facebook with a man who turned out to be a counter-terrorism agent, defence lawyer Rana Fida Hussain said. * +

Any criticism of Mohammed in the devout Muslim country can be dangerous.
It is punishable by death under Pakistani law, and the mere suspicion of blasphemy is enough to ignite deadly mob violence.
Last month a 10-year-old boy was killed when a mob attacked a police station in an attempt to lynch a Hindu man for his insulting religious expression. He had allegedly posted a incendiary image on social media. Five other people were injured in the unrest.
