A new website from Europol is appealing for help in identifying child abusers. The website is publishing images of objects seen in the background of actual child abuse images(obviously not shown) in the hope that someone will recognise/identify them and provide them with important clues and information that could lead to the capture of the abusers.

The method has already proved successful. In one such image, a trampoline could be seen in the background and after zooming in they were able to identify a makers mark, which led investigators to discover that the trampoline was only available from retailers in one particular country, allowing investigators to narrow down the area of their search and eventually trace and capture the abuser who took the photo. * +

Europol is aware that publishing such images carries the risk of tipping off abusers that the police are onto them and them subsequently destroying the incriminating evidence but the images being published are taken from cases where all other investigative techniques have been exhausted and drawn a blank, so they calculate that the risk is worth taking. * +
