Buda (or bouda), in Ethiopian folk religion, is the power of the evil eye and the ability to change into a hyena. Buda is generally believed to be a power held and wielded by those in a different social group, for example among the Beta Israel, or metal workers.
The belief is also present in Sudan, Tanzania, and among the Berber people in Morocco.

Belief in the evil eye, or buda, is widespread in Ethiopia.
The Beta Israel, or Ethiopian Jews, are often characterized by others as possessing buda. Other castes such as ironworkers are often labeled as bearing the buda.
In fact, the word for manual worker,''tabib'', is also used to denote ''one with the evil eye.'' The alleged evil power of the tabib is believed to be at a level similar to that of witches. * +

In the Kanuri language of the Bornu Empire in the Lake Chad region, Werehyenas were called Bultungin (''I change myself into a hyena''). It was traditionally believed that one or two of the villages in the region was populated entirely by Bultungin. Ethiopians traditionally believed that blacksmiths were really wizards or witches who could change into hyenas. These Bouda were believed to rob graves at midnight. The fact that blacksmithing is a traditional profession for Jewish men may be a reason for the characterization of Ethiopian Jews as being 'Bouda'.

In Sudan folklore there is human creature who is nightly transformed into a cannibalistic monster that terrorizes people, especially lovers. The creature is often portrayed as a magically powerful healer, blacksmith, or woodcutter in its human form, but recognizable through signs like a hairy body, red and gleaming eyes and a nasal voice. The Kor cult of the Bambara people in Mali ''become'' hyenas by imitating the animals' behaviour through masks and role plays. * +

It is said the bouda has the ability to mesmerize victims with its eyes or with its pheromones, which sends their victims into a hypnotizing trance. It's more common for a female to transform, than male. Women are the alphas of the pack, but this varies by region. In human form, they're portrayed as a powerful healer, blacksmith, or woodcutter, but recognizable through signs like a hairy body, red and gleaming eyes and a nasal voice.

Those transformed into such hyena men and woman and children are said to be different in appearance from a normal hyena in the wild. They're always described as huge sometimes hairless except for a tuft of hair on the upper back. They walk or stand on their back legs. Their large golden eyes glow red right before they attack, and they have a strange rotted corpse smell that alerts you that they are near. They're also known to bury their half dead victims alive and come back and feast upon them at their leisure. * +

Another take on this legend are the creatures called hyena men. They have two mouths were they can talk and eat at the same time. They have a never ending appetite and are always looking for their next meal. A magician can make them from a person who has tasted human flesh. They tend to abide by cemeteries and eat the dead but they also prey on the living. Some appear handsome while others appear strange and have the smell of hyena in their human form. To catch one, one must lay down a naked beautiful woman whose sight will captivate the Hyena Man with lust. At this moment they are vulnerable to an attack.

The haunting laughter-like calls of the Spotted Hyena inspired the idea in local cultures that they could imitate human voices and call their victims by name.

Another factoid I stumbled across: some hyenas were trapped which (supposedly) happened to be wearing an earring, much like the one 'Budas' wore. Not sure if I read that in Madame Blavatsky or some Dictionary of the Occult. * +
