It means u won't hear the notification sound if a message comes thru...e.g. The sound is muted * +

No sound will be played when the person you've muted messages you. You also won't receive notifications from the muted chat (which is awesome) unless you select the option 'show notifications' whilst muting them. You'll still receive their messages upon opening the app, just no sounds/notifications. * +
