Logically it would be another dimension and if you were to believe the stories then essentially the other dimension would be populated by us.
Us as in our spirits without our bodies and this would be a dimension for us to come to exist in another plain of existence, say like a 'living' and breathing world.
Much like a virtual reality.

Or how the moon landings were all faked and they never went to the moon.

The first alien contact would probably be with some von neumann probe, the distances are just too vast. Unless FTL is possible, interstellar travel is impractical for just observing some random inhabitted planet without at least making contact. * +
