Farmers in the US are feeding their cattle skittles because it's cheeper than corn

That news report was in error. The skittles were not used by farmers but used in feed lots to fatten up the cattle before slaughter. It is cheap carbohydrates and is used to supplement the corn feed.
And yes, that is a lot safer than mixing in brains and spinal tissue with feed which causes mad cow disease. *
