The Gleneagles hotel in Torquay, famous as the inspiration behind the hotel run by Basil Fawlty in Fawlty Towers, is to be knocked down to make way for a new development of retirement flats.(sad)

It wasn't filmed there. The exterior shots were filmed at Wooburn Grange Country Club in Bourne End, Buckinghamshire, which had to be demolished after being extensively damaged in a fire several years ago. * +

They tried to remake it 3 times, all unsuccessfully. Chateau Snavely(starring Betty White and Harvey Korman), Amanda's(starring Bea Arthur) and Payne(starring John Larroquette). * +
