So you need a reference from your previous employer but what if your old boss was a complete x x xx and is likely to write some nasty untrue stuff about you. Is there anything you can do like sueing your old boss? * +

fairly certain it's not legal to write a bad reference. ultimately it's goes down to the question would you re-employ this person.
if you feel you will be stitched up, you can mention during interview that your old boss and you had a personality clash and you're not sure you'll get an honest assessment from him or you can write to a specific person who will be fair and ask them to write you a reference that you hand over yourself. they can check themselves that this person exists and wrote what the letter contains... * +

By law they can't say anything that's not true but they can refuse to give u a reference which is prob enough to ring alarm bells anyway * +

One thing I wouldn't advise is slating your old boss in any interview situation. A friend of the family had similar problems and did just that, surprisingly she didn't get the position she was applying for.. * +

They cant lie on a reference, so its not really worth making stuff up about u, would be easier just not to give u a reference. Saying that, if they did write you a bad reference, you're future/prospective employer doesnt have to and probably wont tell u who said what in your references. * +
