It's the anniversary of the 1938 broadcast tonight, have a listen and take your mind back. The reasons that people found it so believable are numerous, but mainly because many listeners had been tuned into a more popular radio program that had become boring. Therefore many never heard the introduction itself stating that it was a radio play. * +

Secondly it was because the play itself (at the start at least) sounds like a radio program being interrupted by news of an alien invasion. * +
