30yrs ago today the RAF carried out the longest range air attack in aviation history. The idea was simple, bomb the landing strip at Port Stanley in the Falkland Islands and stop the occupying argentine forces from using it. In reality the task was slightly harder. The only RAF aircraft capable of the job was just 3months away from being scr*pped and the distance to target was some 4000miles beyond its maximum range. What followed was like something from a war film.

Taking off from Ascension Island in the middle of the south atlantic it would take a fleet of 15 Victor tankers, 17 seperate in-flight refuellings and some seat of the pants flying to get just one Avro Vulcan-B2 over the target. At the head of this was Vulcan 607 and its 6man crew and payload of twenty one 1000lb bombs. Overcoming severe fuel issues meaning they had no guarantee of making it home, adverse weather and a hornets nest of modern weaponry defending the Falklands. * +

Flying in under enemy radar at a height of approx 300ft, Vulcan 607 got to within 4mins flying time of the target completely undetected, catching most of the argentines asleep and the inexperienced soldiers on duty completely unaware. They were in and out, completely obliterating the airstrip before the enemy had even figured out what was happening or letting off a shot. * +
